Summer gardening tips

‘They say’ it’s going to be a hot one - and going by these pre-summer above average temps ‘they’ may be right.

Summer gardening tips

Summer gardening can be a rewarding and colourful time of year, but it can also be stressful with challenges of intense heat and dry spells. It’s not pleasant to see our careful caring rewarded by fried tomatoes and lettuces or wilting blooms. So here are a few tips for keeping your garden healthy and thriving through the summer months:

Watering: Early morning or late evening is the best time to water your plants. Watering during the cooler parts of the day reduces evaporation and ensures the plants absorb moisture. Aim for deep watering to encourage roots to grow deeper, helping plants withstand the heat. Be mindful not to over-water, as this can lead to root rot.

Mulching: Apply a thick layer of mulch around your plants to retain moisture, regulate soil temperature, and prevent weed growth. Organic mulches like straw, wood chips, or compost work well and break down to enrich the soil over time.

Pruning and deadheading: Remove spent flowers and dead growth regularly. This not only keeps plants looking tidy but also encourages new growth and better air circulation, reducing the risk of disease. Light pruning of shrubs and trees can also help them cope with the heat.

Pest Control: Summer can bring an increase in pests. Use natural remedies like neem oil or insecticidal soap to manage insects. You can also attract beneficial insects, such as ladybugs, to help control pests organically.

Fertilisation: With the active growing season in full swing, your plants may need extra nutrients. Use a balanced fertiliser to promote healthy growth. However, avoid over-fertilising, as this can lead to lush, weak growth that’s more susceptible to pests and disease.

Shade Protection: If your garden is in a particularly hot area, consider providing shade for delicate plants during the hottest part of the day. You can use shade cloth, garden umbrellas, or even larger plants to offer relief from direct sun.

By keeping these tips in mind, you can help your garden stay productive and beautiful throughout the summer months.

Good luck!
